Quasi-Chemical Theory divides the interactions between a solute and its solution environment into inner- and outer-shell contributions, corresponding to the distance between the solvent and the solute. This division allows the use of quantum mechanical calculations for determining inner-shell free energies and less detailed methods for nonlocal effects.
